All you do is go out and interview hundreds or thousands of people and you can get enough footage of heedless, ignorant, ugly, xenophobic dolts to make a feature-length documentary. Just cut out everyone whose responses weren't moronic. It is excellent to see this and contemplate it. It is precisely the aim and the means of the power-mad oligarchs. But it is not the fundamental reality, and it's too good an excuse, too cheap a shot, too irresponsible from any angle you choose to approach it. Yes, this is the product of an ersatz media and a rotten eductional system. Yes, people have been working hard to cultivate this in the general population for as long conservatism has been around.

They have relied upon the pacifism and decency of liberals for all these millennia to let them do it.
