From Earth Portal: More than 25 percent of the country’s 2.4 million bee colonies have vanished, according to an estimate from the Apiary Inspectors of America. Recent, rapid losses have caused some bee colonies to collapse in as little as two days.

Theories about the bees’ disappearance, also known as “colony collapse disorder,” range from blaming a virus, fungus, stress or pesticides to genetically modified crops, cellular phone towers and high-voltage transmission lines.

“We’ve taken all the cell phones away from the bees, so we’re on that,” Mark Brady of the American Honey Producers Association told the panel.
