we need a good candidate

This means of picking from among those declared is even better than the one we have now. Is it too late for some of us to go out and interview people who might actually be good in the job? Instead of just waiting around to see which politicians decide to declare, couldn't we go out into the world and find people with no particular party loyalty, and lots of brains? Is it too late to find such a person and put them up for 2008?
