a devastating line

I mean, I'm reminded of a devastating line I read in the New Yorker the other night. It was in an essay about Philip K. Dick's books by Adam Gopnik, who only a few nights earlier had sent me through the ceiling with some crap about JFK being murdered by Lee Harvey Oswald, ruining a perfectly enjoyable piece about whether Lincoln was with the angels or the ages. Instead of conspiracy nuts, Gopnik was disparaging sixties relics this time:

A small, futile, but perceptive band of stoners and hipsters is ranged against the Empire; they don't win, but they do see.

Yeesh! Dick lived near me my whole life up until he died, and that line smoked.
