4. The US Navy released a chilling video on 8 January 2008 of last weekend’s encounter with Iranian vessels that could have touched off an international crisis. The video shows Iranian speedboats circling around three American warships going through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The crew of the destroyer USS Hopper can be heard repeatedly warning the Iranian boats to identify themselves and move away. An announcement from the destroyer’s bridge said the US ship was engaged in transit passage in accordance with international law and intended no harm. As the Iranian boats continued to approach, the USS Hopper sounded its horn and the crew warned again, "You are straying into danger and may be subject to defensive measures.” At this point in the video, a heavily accented voice is heard over the radio. "I am coming to you. You will explode after a few minutes." The Iranian Foreign Ministry, however, called the incident "ordinary" and denied any use of threatening language. Within seconds such an “ordinary” event could have touched off a war if US ships had decided with every good reason, to take the threat seriously. (Sources: ABC/IHC)
