Granted his autocratic leanings are fairly pronounced, but I don't think people remember -- or knew to begin with -- quite the level of chaos that had taken over Russia in the 1990s. It was NOT mere confusion. It was the bad kind of anarchy, and corruption and crime rings ran completely unchecked. It was utterly unsafe and insecure to be a Russian, and I don't even know if scrupulous democrats could have had any success against the forces of entropy turning Russia into living hell for the common man. Putin's weird blend of democracy and autocracy may have been the best possible scenario for Russia.
We're so busy trying to call this shit government of ours "democracy" that we tend to use Putin as a whipping boy toward that end. I mean, I'm sure you've noticed that we are not practicing what we preach, and I think that has made us the more eager to be shrill about bossy doers who accomplish great things.
Plus, don't forget that I'm hoping that some kind of benefit can come from Putin, or next Medvedev, or Medvedev/Putin, turning the attention of our warmongers away from the slaughter in the streets of the Middle East to a new kind of cold war where people don't die from their incessant greed for the trillions they can pump out of our treasury.
That is, of course, failing an ability to slap every one of the fuckers in jail so we can have a gloriously peaceful planet while we all work our sorry butts off to save our planet from the mass extinctions our profligacy has made nearly certain....
