Long considered a complete failure as a president for falling prey to perfidious money interests disguised as political pundits, Ulysses S. Grant pulled Lincoln's fat out of the fire in his egregious mishandling of the Civil War. Lincoln had been outright clueless and run through every stuffed shirt in the military hierarchy before finally landing on the man for the job. Literally millions died needlessly and most of them were because of Lincoln's bungling. Our appetite for fairy tales over actuality, for a good excuse to do in place of learning lessons, is just bottomless it seems.
