I'm ignoring the crap about Putin maneuvering for the attack on South Ossetia for two reasons: [1] there isn't a shred of evidence to suggest it; and [2] it's too clearly explained as a product of our feverish propagandized-to-pulp imaginations. But this bit is salient:
Apparently her [Rice's] advice fell on deaf ears. Far more enticing, it seems, was her promise of strong U.S. backing for Georgia's rapid entry into NATO. Other American leaders, including Senator John McCain, assured Saakashvili of unwavering U.S. support. Whatever was said in these private conversations, the Georgian president seems to have interpreted them as a green light for his adventuristic impulses.
There are, additionally, a thousand reports of U.S. ships continuing into the Black Sea and Putin calmly asserting Russian dominance, and fizzes about Russia providing Iran with missiles, and all kinda terrify-you-more stuff floating around out there. I can't tell it from the rest of the posturing or if it's particularly more than just the notion that threats of war are better for McCain at work here. So, fuck it. I'm not going to post all that stuff. It's just stuff... at this point.
And, yes, not only do I completely believe him, I also think his proposals and actions are lucid, where ours are flat out not.
Also reasonable as heck....
