MOSCOW, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will not meet with Barack Obama on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, due to open on September 15, the Iranian president's spokesman said on Monday.
"Talks with American officials are not on the agenda of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to New York for the UN General Assembly session," Ali Akbar Javanfekr was quoted as saying by the Iranian Students News Agency.
Javanfekr said Ahmadinejad had expressed willingness to meet with President Obama, but "so far we have not received a positive response from the U.S. president," ISNA reported.
Last week, Iran issued a package of proposals for wide-ranging talks on international issues, but not its disputed nuclear program. Russia's foreign minister said there was something to work with in Iran's latest offering, but U.S. officials rejected it as falling short of international demands.
Iran and six world powers involved in negotiations on the nuclear dispute - the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia - are to meet on October 1 to address the Islamic Republic's uranium enrichment activities, it was confirmed on Monday after talks between Iran's chief nuclear negotiator and the European Union's foreign policy chief.
The West suspects Iran of secretly seeking to build nuclear weapons. Tehran says it needs nuclear technology for electricity generation.
Obama said in July that Tehran must respond by the end of September to the proposal from the Iran Six that it halt nuclear activities in exchange for trade incentives.
The United States, France and Germany said they would seek harsher sanctions for the Islamic Republic if it turned down the proposal, while Russia and China favor more diplomatic efforts.
