Are you suffering out there?

  3. Not a doubt in my mind it's about suffering, about an almost cellular desire to mitigate the cruelty of life. One can barely help oneself. People who know horoscopes are bullcrap will nonetheless perk up if there is a particularly propitious forecast for them. Instead of using the I Ching to aid contemplation people want to throw the coins because it may make words they come up with that way apply to real life if they do... even though stopping to think about it would counsel otherwise. It's why I feel denigrating religious belief is too harsh, and starts one turning into exactly what one sought to denigrate.

I just had a near-catastrophe that might have turned into confirmation of the malign character of Fridays the Thirteenth. In order to make the seat belt alarm stop blasting psychotically in Goldie, they had to disconnect a wire that also controls the intermittent wipers AND the headlight warning tones. I left my headlights on the whole time I was at the store and the battery was loath to start the engine. Seems the rain has stopped tonight, but it's still stupidly cold, and I was going to have to go through all kinds of changes to get home if the wan little trickle of juice left had not been enough to get me started.....

  4. Ah yes, clearly the result of the Friday 13 curse. It made me forget to put the short ribs in the crock pot this morning. Oh well, it's Friday anyway.
