canadian first nations being crabby about russian ice dancers

Pfeh. Earlier today, I saw RIA Novosti bragging on their kids winning the European competition, favorites for the Olympics. I'd never heard of them, being without a tv and having lost interest in ice skating since it became more like kamikaze gymnastics than skating... just isn't pretty or fun at all anymore... though pretty mellow here... but I wanted to see these two and went over to YouTube and caught a couple of their winning routines from years past. I wasn't excited by their skating, and don't think they're nearly as great as Torvill and Dean... honestly... but... uhm... this Shabalin kid is riveting. You hardly notice Domnina, or even really that they're skating, so much as you notice this kid is devastatingly sexy. Or... maybe it's just me. Yikes.

So, anyway, as for the controversial "aboriginal themed" dance, their costumes are just plain stupid. They seem to have a history of going a little far out in the costume department, but this one takes the cake. I say, add some more didgeridoo into the music, don't touch the routine, and wear something sleek, hip and all black with maybe a couple two or three stark white nativish patterns on it. End of problem.

I swear, though, it's annoying for people to be getting snippy about this first nation stuff. This isn't racism... or even insensitivity... so much as stupid, thoroughly stupid, costumes. The natives—well maybe not some of the Canadian ones—they're pretty much always pissed off about everything—like me—are really only making this big cranky stink because the costumes are so dumb. Make 'em way chic instead and the crowds will go wild.

  1. I think they should dress up like a bishop and a slutty nun. Now *that* would get them some press!
