religious rites are just nutty

I've heard the excuse that they serve to concentrate one on the path to righteousness or perfection, but, well, no, they serve to illustrate to self and/or others that one is pious. Forget piety! Illustrate it to yourself and your community! Why actually be humble when there are all these convenient, if sometimes uncomfortable, ways to engage in religious braggadocio instead?
