Three German-built Israeli submarines equipped with nuclear cruise missiles are to be deployed in the Gulf near the Iranian coastline.

The first has been sent in response to Israeli fears that ballistic missiles developed by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah, a political and military organisation in Lebanon, could hit sites in Israel, including air bases and missile launchers.

The submarines of Flotilla 7 — Dolphin, Tekuma and Leviathan — have visited the Gulf before. But the decision has now been taken to ensure a permanent presence of at least one of the vessels.

The flotilla’s commander, identified only as “Colonel O”, told an Israeli newspaper: “We are an underwater assault force. We’re operating deep and far, very far, from our borders.”

Each of the submarines has a crew of 35 to 50, commanded by a colonel capable of launching a nuclear cruise missile.

The vessels can remain at sea for about 50 days and stay submerged up to 1,150ft below the surface for at least a week. Some of the cruise missiles are equipped with the most advanced nuclear warheads in the Israeli arsenal.

The deployment is designed to act as a deterrent, gather intelligence and potentially to land Mossad agents. “We’re a solid base for collecting sensitive information, as we can stay for a long time in one place,” said a flotilla officer.

The submarines could be used if Iran continues its programme to produce a nuclear bomb. “The 1,500km range of the submarines’ cruise missiles can reach any target in Iran,” said a navy officer.

Apparently responding to the Israeli activity, an Iranian admiral said: “Anyone who wishes to do an evil act in the Persian Gulf will receive a forceful response from us.”

Israel’s urgent need to deter the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah alliance was demonstrated last month. Ehud Barak, the defence minister, was said to have shown President Barack Obama classified satellite images of a convoy of ballistic missiles leaving Syria on the way to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, will emphasise the danger to Obama in Washington this week.

Tel Aviv, Israel’s business and defence centre, remains the most threatened city in the world, said one expert. “There are more missiles per square foot targeting Tel Aviv than any other city,” he said.
And, you don't suppose this could have something to do with it, do you? Or Rahmbo's little visit?

Truly, put me in charge. This shit will go away.

  2. I'm trying to take refuge in the thought that the ENTIRE world will turn against Israel if they attack Iran or Lebanon ever again, that their whole dream of Zion will be pau, and they are not stupid and hubristically blind enough to miss that... but, well, they are WORSE than Hitler, while we're only about on a par with him, in this psychopathy, so... well... fuck.

    Put me in charge.

  4. That is a lot more positive than when I was considering putting it in this post! I don't give fuck how furious they are, so stopped reading the particulars of what drew their fury. However, I don't expect anything to come of it. I think the best we can hope for is the rest of the world just continuing to sort of politely stonewall us, never leaving any way for us to consider them approving enough of our position to allow an attack we could say had their backing.

  5. The fact they are furious is a good thing. IMHO

Show it may have some teeth.

  6. I don't mean to be a drag, but Israel has utterly ignored a shitload of UN resolutions with NO consequence, and we have shown over and over again in this administration that we will NOT hold any firm line where Israel is concerned [let alone much else] so I don't think there is any reason for positive feelings, except liking how pissed they are. Problem is: They NEVER back down when they conceive ANY alternative and the United States is NOT closing up the loop here. No way.

  7. There is reason to hope Russia and China will stop them, but they seem to be unwilling to be OVERT, preferring I think to try to avert WWIII by not leaving a diplomatic opening, forcing us and/or Israel to act unilaterally if we dare.

I'm pretty sure we will dare when we are told to dare, or when Israel dares.

  10. Things sure have intensified overnight!

(I was going to say changed, however that would imply that things were different before.
Intensified is the closest I can think of.)

  11. Don't you think for a moment that this and this attack against the Turks isn't about them having taken away the perception of threat from Iran.

    FILTHY, FILTHY SWINE!!!!!!

    I'm beside myself still.
