At least it seems you had a rich relationship with him over the years. It shows in your concern and understanding.

My memories are of fear, feeling unwanted, physical pain of a belt raising bleeding welts on my young posterior, changing for gym in the corner, hiding the evidence, twistedly believing it was due.

No lack of token trinkets, nice house, boats, A-frame cabin overlooking the beach, no feeling of love. Fear of being yelled at and punsihed for the slightest mistake, "Will I pull the jib in fast enough on the next tack?", no recognition of achievements, prophecies of "ditch digging".

Ultimately abandonment in my time of most need.

But then all that negates being in the position such as yours. Yet I am in a way jealous.

My father had a father like that.

Maybe it was why he worked himself to a pulp seven days a week to give us a good life for so long.

So it would be sort of like Rin and Kae deciding you were too dotty to keep around, having you locked up on a ward with strangers an hour away from home, and leaving your black sheep daughter to rip her heart out of her chest many hours away over the coldness and ingratitude of treating a man who had given so much of his life and dreams for them all this way.

My father and I are the only ones in my family who live in love and gratitude, and I hope you don't have the same split in the fundamentals in your family as in ours. SIXTY YEARS! My parents have been married SIXTY years, and she could DO this to him! Further, she is CONVINCED she is doing the right thing and that I'm just in denial!

Try THAT one on for size! Try knowing with every fibre that your loved one is still lucid, going and checking it out thoroughly and in person, and have them tell you you're just in denial!

IT'S FUCKING BARBARIC!!!!! IT'S FUCKING HEINOUS!!!! IT'S FUCKING WORSE THAN ALL THE BEATINGS HE TOOK AS A BOY!
