Don't assume you are safe. Check. A couple years ago my mother started getting dunning notices from a law firm for a credit card bill she never got, on a credit card she never signed up for, on a credit card she'd never used. She demanded an explanation for the charges and got evidence of some account in her name being charged for a bank audit, CLEARLY not belonging on anyone's credit card, let alone on a nonexistent one. The mistake was explained to the lawyer who was calling to hassle her for payment. He kept calling.
I explained to her that people were doing this now, that LAWYERS were doing this now, that BANKS were doing this now, that the IRS was doing this now. Just picking suckers out of hats and driving them so crazy they will pay just to get out from under the frustration and anger and agitation and fear of court. I told her that rabid fiends who knew I was NOT responsible for 86's debts were calling me and nastily threatening to take me to court. My stock response is to sweetly and concernedly tell them they shouldn't waste their money because they will lose. When they stay nasty, I merely tell them coolly to go right ahead. Then they stop calling.
I constantly remind her that this is NOT the same America she has lived in all these years. That the establishment is now criminal. I told her NEVER to pay that attorney, if he even was one, a cent. I'm afraid to ask if she did. Made me sick to hear her submissive tones when speaking with him and I don't know if even SENSE can break through such hardened notions of who is impeccable and who is not. You'd probably faint if you realized how many people think business suits equal integrity.
Let's be careful out there.
