The Bolivian President and a Russian political leader have launched a campaign to revoke Obama's honour after the US attacked Libya.

Liberal Democratic Party of Russia leader and Vice-Chairman of the State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky released a statement today calling for the Nobel Prize Committee to take back the honour bestowed on US President Barack Obama in 2009.

Zhirinovsky said the attacks were "another outrageous act of aggression by NATO forces and, in particular, the United States," and that the attacks demonstrated a "colonial policy" with "one goal: to establish control over Libyan oil and the Libyan regime." He said the prize was now hypocritical as a result.

Bolivian President Evo Morales echoed the call: "How is it possible that a Nobel Peace Prize winner leads a gang to attack and invade? This is not a defence of human rights or self-determination."

Morales won the Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights in 2006.

He is amongst a number of left-leaning Latin American leaders who have denounced the attacks against Libya. Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Rafael Correa of Ecuador, Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Cristina Fernandez of Argentina have all criticised western media coverage of the Libyan crisis.

Morales and Chavez repeated calls for peace talks with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples." The Committee praised the "change in the international climate" affected by Obama's presidency.

In his Nobel Lecture, he discussed the "hard truth" of the inevitability of war, saying: "There will be times when nations — acting individually or in concert — will find the use of force not only necessary but morally justified."

A message has been widely retweeted on Twitter today: "Obama has now fired more cruise missiles than all other Nobel Peace prize winners combined."

I beg the Nobel Committee to heed these decent people and revoke that prize. Insofar as anyone respects it anymore, it is a travesty to stand back and watch "peace" laureates go on killing sprees.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said on Wednesday his country could host an international summit on climate change in April, which could become an alternative to Copenhagen climate talks held in December, Latin American media reported.

"In April next year, I intend to convene the world's public organizations for this international peoples' conference on climate change," the Bolivian leader told journalists, adding "we will invite not only peoples and public organizations, but also scientists, academicians and experts."

Morales, who was declared by the United Nations "World Hero of Mother Earth" for his environmental protection activities, said "Mother Earth's rights" would be discussed at the conference in Bolivia. He said the talks would take place on International Mother Earth Day, on April 22, ahead of a summarizing climate conference in Mexico due in late 2010.


The UN climate summit, which took place in the Danish capital on December 7-18, was originally expected to see the signing of a new binding agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol, some points of which expire in 2012. However, participants of the talks failed to agree on greenhouse emissions cuts and only agreed on measures to be taken to keep average increases in global temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius.

Only several countries have signed a declarative agreement on fighting climate change. The document was sharply criticized by Latin American states such as Cuba, Bolivia, Venezuela and Nicaragua, which claimed that their opinion was not taken into consideration while the document was discussed and that the discussions were not transparent.

British Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has criticized Bolivia, along with other leftwing Latin American countries, China and Sudan, for trying to hijack the climate talks and "hold the world at ransom" to prevent an agreement from being reached.

Tension Rises Between US & Venezuela

Tension between the US and Venezuela is also on the rise as Venezuela has expelled the US ambassador in Caracas. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused the Bush administration of trying to overthrow Evo Morales.

Hugo Chavez: "They are toppling Evo in front of us. They are harassing an entire people in front of our noses, and we cannot remain with our arms crossed. We cannot stay quiet.”

Meanwhile, the Bush administration has expelled the Venezuelan ambassador from Washington and declared that two top Venezuelan intelligence officials have supported narco-terrorist activities in the region.
