If this new one blows, we can expect Míla to get a web cam to let us keep an eye on it. There is a link to Míla's volcano cams under the volcano image on my sidebar too.

Completely unfettered. Utterly free. Not a care in the world.

We should take a cue from Ireland... only leave out the central bank part altogether. Smarter and constitutional.

Concept....

seems to me iceland took perkins' words to heart

.

It feels like that to me anyway. I feel pangs, wishing I could be there. It's more than the Peace Tower. It's more than those glorious geothermal spas. It's more than their solidarity with Wikileaks. It's the will of the people to call bullshit for real, to engage and keep engaged. I know this has to be vastly easier in such a small and remote place, but still, I have an ache for it. I wish so hard to be among people acting right... alert... aware... willing... in solidarity... real love....

decency itself

I know you were brought up to think THIS is where decency prevails, but I'm pretty sure you can't cite a recent case of it here that comes anywhere near what Iceland is doing.

Among the issues under discussion was debt relief options for householders and the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, the press freedom bill championed by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The bill was passed.
Iceland might become the very last outpost where true humans might honestly dig in for the long haul... volcanoes and all....

Volcano erupts in Iceland; hundreds evacuated
By GUDJON HELGASON, Associated Press Writer — 24 mins ago

REYKJAVIK, Iceland – Authorities evacuated hundreds of people after a volcano erupted beneath a glacier in southern Iceland, Iceland's civil protection agency said Sunday.

The eruption occurred around 11:30 p.m. Saturday (1930 EDT) beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, the fifth largest glacier in Iceland. The volcano is covered by an ice cap.

Fearing flooding from the glacier melt, authorities evacuated some 400 people in the area 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of the capital, Reykjavik, as a precaution but no damage or injuries have been reported, said Vidir Reynisson, the department manager for the Icelandic Civil Protection Department.

A state of emergency has been declared in communities near the 100 square mile (160 kilometers) glacier.

"We do not at this moment know the full extent of the eruption but a team is flying over the site now to evaluate the situation," said Reynisson.

A European volcanic island in the North Atlantic, Iceland is largely an arctic desert with mountains, glaciers and volcanoes and agricultural areas in the lowlands close to the coastline.

The last time the volcano erupted was in the 1820s.

Pay very close attention, class... this stuff is going to be on your finals....
Gudrun Jonsdottir, a 36-year-old office worker, said: "I’ve just had enough of this whole thing. I don’t trust the government, I don’t trust the banks, I don’t trust the political parties, and I don’t trust the IMF.

"We had a good country and they ruined it."

Just so.

Things didn't start getting ugly with Afghanistan until I determined I really wanted to visit there. Things didn't start going wrong for Iceland until I determined I really wanted to move there.... Coincidence? I rather think not.

Some time ago Old Uncle Dave was trying to discourage me in my urges to move to Iceland where I could enjoy ultrafast internet and geothermal heating and long hours in restorative spas and John's Peace Tower, on the grounds that U.S. corporations and Dick Cheney already had their grubby mitts all over the place. Well. Heh. Maybe not!
