a late night drive to town

I couldn't put it together to feed myself. So I got myself into a situation where I pretty much had to: the drive up window. On the way there a cop tried the old tailgate into a ticket bit on me. At least he was honest enough to fail honorably. They were out of all the stuff in the vaguely edible category and I ended up with a mucilaginous wad of something burgerlike in name only and some badly prepared fries... but a black woman who called me "hon" very brightly waited on me. I'd just been remarking that I don't think we have any black people in Del Norte, except maybe the one I heard about marrying the lady at the video rental counter. Maybe he's related to this one? Anyway. We are integrated. As I was pulling away from the window and off to hassle with my glop on the road home, I had to slow for a woman about my age who was riding a mountain bike with a little trailer behind it. The trailer was a converted shopping cart with a bunch of stuff packed in plastic bags. She had fashioned a do-rag sort of situation on her head out of a plastic grocery bag. She was lean. And about as grubby as a coal miner.
