Massive Cache of Iraq War Docs to Be Published by WikiLeaks

A massive cache of previously unpublished classified U.S. military documents from the Iraq War is being readied for publication by WikiLeaks, a new report has confirmed.

The documents constitute the “biggest leak of military intelligence” that has ever occurred, according to Iain Overton, editor of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, a nonprofit British organization that is working with WikiLeaks on the documents.

The documents are expected to be published in several weeks.

Overton, who discussed the project with Newsweek, didn’t say how many documents were involved or disclose their origin, but they may be among the leaks that an imprisoned Army intelligence analyst claimed to have sent to WikiLeaks earlier this year.

Pfc. Bradley Manning, who has been charged with improperly downloading and leaking classified information, disclosed to a former hacker in May that he had given WikiLeaks a database covering 500,000 events in the Iraq War between 2004 and 2009. Manning said the database included reports, dates, and latitude and longitude of events, as well as casualty figures.

A leak of this sort would vastly dwarf the cache of about 75,000 documents that WikiLeaks published in July from the Afghanistan War. That cache involved field reports from analysts who compiled information from informants and others on incidents and intelligence.

Overton said that his group is working on the new cache of documents with major television networks and print-media outlets in several countries, including the United States, to produce documentaries and stories based on them. The collaboration is similar to what was done in July when WikiLeaks worked with three news outlets — The New York Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel — to simultaneously publish stories on the Afghan War logs.

Overton told Newsweek that the media organizations working on the new Iraq documents have taken into consideration the controversy that surrounded the publication of the Afghan War logs.

WikiLeaks, which published unredacted raw documents on its website at the same time the news outlets published their stories, was criticized by the Defense Department and others for potentially disclosing identifying information that could put the lives of informants and their families in danger. There has been no evidence to date, however, that anyone has suffered actual harm due to the documents.

“We are hugely aware that this is an issue, and we’re taking it very seriously,” Overton said, noting that his organization would not be publishing raw documents but would instead be mining them for information for stories.

The media organizations working with WikiLeaks will each be making financial contributions to the production costs, according to Overton. It’s not clear if this means the media organizations will contribute money to WikiLeaks or will simply be pooling money to produce joint media projects and stories related to the documents.

Overton said he would not be answering any more questions about the issue, when contacted by Threat Level for clarification.

Newsweek has quoted anonymous sources who say that some of the most-disturbing information in the documents relates to the abusive treatment of detainees by Iraqi security forces.

The Defense Department did not respond to a request for comment from Threat Level.

I'd say Newsweek, which recently sold for one dollar, is about to experience a huge rise in circulation.

You can sneer at the old saw about guns not killing people, but it's a FACT, and being armed is the ONLY thing that slows a tyranny from taking you out. You might also want to consider that there is EVERY reason to believe all our cities and towns are about to become supremely dangerous places to be. When everyone around you is hungry, some of them, many of them won't have the strength left to keep from taking your last bite. I hope it doesn't become like an apocalypse movie where people start eating each other, but I guarantee it will become too awful for you even far short of that. It's about time. This has been one of the most demoralizing features of Left Blogistan for me, and The Real News has disappointed me with a lot of the stuff they've done, but this short piece is way more balanced than any other go-in-and-interview-the-opposition, or even any of the go-in-and-interview-the-man-on-the-street videos I've seen to date. They ALL have been nothing more than tight analogs of the video done by that little criminal who made it look as though ACORN was in the business of helping pimps and working girls get over on the system. You can make a video look as though people are saying anything you want them to be saying.

Witness that abortion they broadcast about Tim McVeigh on MSNBC last night. They made it look as though he said exactly what it serves them to have us think he said. Worse than twaddle! It's lethally delusory shit.

The left is as guilty, even in a sense MORE guilty, of this murderous stuff as the right has been, because the left does it with so much more finesse. The left appeals to people not stupid or selfish enough to buy the bullcrap cranked out by the right's propaganda machine. The right has going for it that its rubes generally have more honesty and courage. The left has going for it that its rubes generally have more education and—until recently—solidarity with the downtrodden. Note, please, the distinction here I'm making between the rubes from both sides and the lying pundits from both sides who mindfuck the rubes for a living.

I have long maintained that conservatives are the people you want around you when you are in trouble. They will knock themselves out to help you. Liberals will call the authorities. Struth, dudes. Deal with it. And we have to start remembering that Ruby Ridge and Waco were atrocities against the People by the State at least on a par with all the union busting done by the right... maybe worse... I can argue both sides of that one.

Here, with this video, I am going to trust you not to be a partisan asshole and see how these people can think the way they think without being dangerous to your ideals for how our society should work. Our government has created this horrific mess we are in—Republicans and Democrats alike—and ALWAYS take corporate and plutocratic advantage to be more important than any or all of US. You gotta stop wanting to identify yourself as a liberal or a conservative so badly that you spend all your time vilifying your countrymen and NONE of it even talking about stopping the real harm.

TRUTH and JUSTICE are what matter. Of these, truth is THE most crucial part. Justice is also vital, but NOT in the sense of retribution so much as in the sense of equality and solidarity. You're going to insist upon a bunch of relative truths that fuel your partisanship, and I'm going to tear out my hair. People are FOREVER going on about "which truth" and "there is no absolute truth" and shit like that, and I keep tearing out my hair. Truth is stuff like we've killed at least a million Iraqis; I'm wearing my Emu boots; there's a fresh cup of coffee to the left of my keyboard right now; Obama has worsened and strengthened most of the crimes of the last administration; we have a broken government full of fuckers on the take and completely ignoring the Constitution... that sort of thing. See you can't EVER get justice if you don't master the truth part.

If you keep missing it, and you keep missing it, there not only will never be justice, but all your intense effort amounts to GOSSIP. Period.

I didn't just say that to be insulting. I said it because I love you and it hurts me to see you struggling so hard for bubkes.

I've long held that I would join the Libertarian Party if they'd just put something in there about a social safety net and universal health care. This would be enough of a compromise for me because I don't believe any human should have to pay for food, housing, clothing, utilities, anything we need to live long, healthy and happy lives. I think you're an evil-bastard-in-denial if you think otherwise, and only ever don't rip you to ribbons because you've been conditioned to think otherwise since the day you were born, but nonetheless I can see how the Libertarian position on tearing our government down to bare bones might be the ONLY feasible way of ever attaining the leftist's ideal society. Maybe even the Libertarians' way, but probably not. Maybe. Probably not. Still, we would HAVE to start by doing it their way, stripping the government down to almost nothing, before we could put in the stuff that is mandatory to keeping the WHOLE population served.

Fla. man exonerated after 35 years behind bars

BARTOW, Fla. — James Bain used a cell phone for the first time Thursday, calling his elderly mother to tell her he had been freed after 35 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

Mobile devices didn't exist in 1974, the year he was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping a 9-year-old boy and raping him in a nearby field.

Neither did the sophisticated DNA testing that officials more recently used to determine he could not have been the rapist.

"Nothing can replace the years Jamie has lost," said Seth Miller, a lawyer for the Florida Innocence Project, which helped Bain win freedom. "Today is a day of renewal."

Bain spent more time in prison than any of the 246 inmates previously exonerated by DNA evidence nationwide, according to the project. The longest-serving before him was James Lee Woodard of Dallas, who was released last year after spending more than 27 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.

As Bain walked out of the Polk County courthouse Thursday, wearing a black T-shirt that said "not guilty," he spoke of his deep faith and said he does not harbor any anger.

"No, I'm not angry," he said. "Because I've got God."

The 54-year-old said he looks forward to eating fried turkey and drinking Dr Pepper. He said he also hopes to go back to school.

Friends and family surrounded him as he left the courthouse after Judge James Yancey ordered him freed. His 77-year-old mother, who is in poor health, preferred to wait for him at home. With a broad smile, he said he looks forward to spending time with her and the rest of his family.

"That's the most important thing in my life right now, besides God," he said.

Earlier, the courtroom erupted in applause after Yancey ruled.

"Mr. Bain, I'm now signing the order," Yancey said. "You're a free man. Congratulations."

Thursday's hearing was delayed 40 minutes because prosecutors were on the phone with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. DNA tests were expedited at the department's lab and ultimately proved Bain innocent. Prosecutors filed a motion to vacate the conviction and the sentence.

"He's just not connected to this particular incident," State Attorney Jerry Hill told the judge.

Attorneys from the Innocence Project of Florida got involved in Bain's case earlier this year after he had filed several previous petitions asking for DNA testing, all of which were thrown out.

A judge finally ordered the tests and the results from a respected private lab in Cincinnati came in last week, setting the wheels in motion for Thursday's hearing. The Innocence Project had called for Bain's release by Christmas.

He was convicted largely on the strength of the victim's eyewitness identification, though testing available at the time did not definitively link him to the crime. The boy said his attacker had bushy sideburns and a mustache. The boy's uncle, a former assistant principal at a high school, said it sounded like Bain, a former student.

The boy picked Bain out of a photo lineup, although there are lingering questions about whether detectives steered him.

The jury rejected Bain's story that he was home watching TV with his twin sister when the crime was committed, an alibi she repeated at a news conference last week. He was 19 when he was sentenced.

Florida last year passed a law that automatically grants former inmates found innocent $50,000 for each year they spent in prison. No legislative approval is needed. That means Bain is entitled to $1.75 million.
